On the road to Yellowstone NP

We stayed Tuesday night in Leisure Valley in Decatur, MI. We just set up enough to spend the night. 95* when we arrived, so had the AC and the fans all running all night long.
Today, Wednesday, we pulled into a really nice park called Hickory Hollow in Utica, IL. We arrived around noon, so made something to eat and then set out to explore the area a bit.

We discoved that this Utica, IL is an historical area. So we headed into town. Looks like it may have been very nice at one time, but the town was quite run down. So we ventured a little further to Starved Rock State Park. To our amazement, it was free to enter and drive around the area. Here's a picture of Starved Rock below. We didn't venture down the foot trails or to the waterfalls. They did have a nice visitors center loaded with area history.

On our way home, Mark noticed along the freeway a JC Whitney Outlet Store, so we pulled in there to take a look. Surprisingly we didn't buy a thing! When we were leaving the outlet, I saw this barn that I had to take a picture of.

When we returned to the park, what did we find sitting in the drive? A Cedar Creek. A few minutes later the Cedar Creek pulled into the lot right next to ours! Of course Mark went over to see if they had heard about the Cedar Creek RV Club and they were already members. After talking for a bit, turns out that Mark had replied to Howard's post on the forum. What a small world. His wife Eilene and their two children were helping to set up. They were on their way home from picking up their new trailer from Ohio. Here we are side by side.

This park is already nearly full tonight. Sure is a beautiful place. Free wi-fi, heated pool, nice sites with shade and grass. At the Passport America rate, the night was $16. Pretty good price. One downfall though is no cable and not very good TV reception.

Mark says that I probably will not be able to get on the internet tomorrow. I guess we will see what happens at our next stop. Regardless, I will try to save up the info from the trip and post it here to this blog as soon as I can get on-line again.

To all.....have a wonderful afternoon. Hopefully this evening we will be visiting with our neighbors.

Sandy

Nice post...that is neat that you were camping next to a Cedar Creek.
It sounds as though we are getting the shaft staying in KOAs on our way over, but my reservations are already booked. We will have to check out that passport america for next time.
Drive safely...

Wow Sandy! Nice job telling about what you have been doing. It was fun to read! Looks like you are having a great time! Love the Corn Palace photo and how nice to be sitting by the pool while writing your blog! I would have to say that is when life is good! I guess we are going to have to check into this Passport America thing. I to think we are going to get the shaft with the KOA's we are going to stay in, but reservations already made. Oh well! Got one question for you. Did you make reservations before starting out at all of these places or are you winging it?

Safe travels!

Hi Lana,
We are sure having a great time on this trip. Seeing such beautiful country. The pictures just cannot do it justice!
Mark made all of the reservations before we left out. We only skipped over one that was a corp of engineers park for $8. We decided that we wanted to go a bit further, so just called ahead to a campground and were able to get in without a problem. I would say that you could most likely wing it and call ahead each night except for maybe the weekends. If it is a nicer park, they fill up quickly. I think that you would probably be able to find something though even if you winged it. My daughter also booked KOA's and is now sorry that she didn't look into the passport america deal. You get your money back in the first couple of nights.
Happy Trails!
